Celebrating 50 Years: Living Hero: Sen. Joe Bernal

I’m Senator Joe Bernal and I’m very proud to
have been part of the beginnings of UTSA. San Antonio deserved a four-year
university. What we were supporting in building at UTSA was something that was
going to be good for everybody in the state of Texas.
Frank Lombardino on the house side had signed up just about every house member
on the bill to create a university at San Antonio. There were a lot of people
in the Senate that wanted to support me… the two persons that were
probably the worst to overcome: one represented Austin, the other one
represented A & M, and what they were telling their friends was: if you create
universities here in South Texas, A&M is gonna go down the drain; the
University of Texas is gonna be another small university in the United States…
and we can’t afford to have that. There was a large Chamber of Commerce in San
Antonio… we worked together, and that kind of a combination, we were able
to get some of the conservatives in the Senate to start
warming up. And, being that we were the third largest city in the state of Texas
and being that we didn’t have a four-year university… all of
those arguments came to play. I thought I’d never live… (laughs) …I thought I’d never live
long enough to say what I’m going to say… and that is: Congratulations, UTSA
for 50 years of existence… of magnanimous fantastic service to our San Antonio
public!
