DRAWING with my kids – CLOUD EEL (No.66)

Hi Everybody, welcome to our
Father and Sons’ drawing channel. Today I will talk about the Koomos. The Koomos are fantasy characters created through the design collaboration between my sons and myself You must already know them as they often appear
our drawings. I use them to highlight the new creatures. I decided to develop their universe and I’m happy to announce that I’m working on a comic book about these characters. Here are the 4 heroes of our comic book series. And they’ll be in today’s illustration In the story, the Koomos will meet with a witch who rides a flying creature. I asked Itsuki how could look that creature. Here’s his drawing. The head of this flying snake is very simple, there are many ways to interpret it. So I made sketches, that I submitted to Itsuki. Some kind of dragon, a fish head, a dolphin, and a funny worm… I asked my son which one he prefers. He told me he liked this one, the fish. I worked more on it, developped, adding more details. I made a draft for the patterns on the body. And I also made this composition thumbnail. I made something very simple, very readable, The flying eel is occupying the entire page, the four Koomos are all together at the top of the picture, trying to hang on to the horns, and the eel takes them above the clouds. Thanks to the early sketches,
I know exactly where I’m going now. I can start drawing. I always start very softly so it’s barely visible. The pencil I use has a hard tip. I place the big creature this giant eel. And above it, I start to roughly draw the Koomos silhouettes. And I’ll add details little by little The creature has a chain all around, and a lot of skin scales. It takes quite a lot of time to draw, as the scales pattern must follow the shape and the volume of the creature. It’s a bit technical. Now I’m using a mechanical pencil with a softer tip, adding details, getting ready for the inking, later. It’s the first time I draw these four Koomos with different costumes.
Usually they all wear the same outfit. This is Igo. hanging on to the base of the horns. Of the four Koomos, he’s the one that is better suited for action. He is quite reckless. Next to him, it’s Mimo. Quite the opposite actually. He’s the clever one. He wears a monocle. His skill is conversation. He’s good at talking, and persuading people. He’s currently not very comfortable in this dangerous situation. The next one hanging on to the horn is Eko. He’s the explorer. He’s curious about everything in the world. And he knows a lot about it. And the 4th one, at the far right, it’s Pelo. The most emotional of the four He can feel a lot of things about what is happening around them. He’s intuitive, and close to nature, animals… Here I’m inking the scales. They are not flat. When I draw them, I try to make them turn around, make them follow the creature’s shape Itsuki made those patterns on his drawing so I just tried to reproduce them. The inking is over, I’ll start the watercolor. As usual, I start with the background. The background is very simple. It’s just… clouds. In Koomo’s world there are a lot of clouds. Speaking of which, in japanese, “kumo” means cloud. I tried something here, I’ve put some pink color in clouds to avoid having blue everywhere. So there are touches of pink, purple,
in the clouds. I thought it’d be nice. The creature itself is blue and purple so I think it’ll be harmonious in the end. All the fins have a shading of white to purple. I struggled a little bit here as you can see. There’s too much water so I have to soak it with a tissue… and to make the gradation, I remove some of
the pigment. While the watercolor is still wet, it’s possible to work it, adding pigment, removing water. So it’s quite malleable but when it’s dry, it’s too late. I paint the areas… leaving a white reflection. Once painted, I come over with a darker color to add shadows which give volume. This time the shadow is purple. There’s some pink in the clouds, purple in the fins, on the Koomos as well, I’ll add a purple shadow. All that to give an harmony. The very first illustration of the Koomos was also
in this kind of color scheme. It’s a palette I like using for these characters And here’s the final illustration with the four little Koomos on the top. Thank you for watching the video, I hope you enjoyed it. About the comic book, I’m working on it, not alone but with another french artist,
very talented. We will move forward and we’ll tell you when there are updates. That’s it, see you soon! If you like our artworks you can order our illustration book, it’s available in English, French, and Japanese. If you can afford it, support us on Patreon to help produce our videos. Thanks again! 1.

  6. Amazing video, can't wait for your upcoming comic. It would really be great if you made some videos on colour combinations and usage of different colours to make our drawing look more radiant!!

  13. Excellent as always. I really truly enjoy your illustrations and I think its such a wonderful way that you bond and spend time with your sons! I look forward to the comics! Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!

  14. Fantastic news! I will be looking for this comic! I feel as though this will be a wonderful thing. Limitless possibilities with you and your son's creativity.

  15. First of all, congratulations on your comic book project. I love your works, mr. Romain. You always give a story to your drawings/paintings. It feels as if I was looking at a comic book panel or a comic book cover. So glad that you decided to always give a background story to every painting you made. Thank you for sharing your works with us.

  21. I love the colors u picked and the for the shading! Great job to you and your son! 👍👍👍 Im looking forward to the comic!

  23. You should illustrate a trading card game. That would be so amazing! I would spend hours creating my own cars games as kid, mainly just tinkering and refining the battle systems and such.

  24. Hey, just wondering. With all the drawing your son does and living with an anime artist….. shouldn't he be really good by now? Hasn't it been years already? He is still drawing child like doodles, probably to keep the series going but I suspect he is actually a pretty solid artist by now. Since these videos get so many views and give him so much motivation. He definately will be a great artist even if he doesn't want to enter the industry.

  25. Does anyone still have that one comment which summarize the role and connection between one character to another? It was such a fantastic read and I want to reread it today
