School strike for climate – save the world by changing the rules | Greta Thunberg | TEDxStockholm

Translator: Akinori Oyama
Reviewer: Peter van de Ven When I was about eight years old, I first heard about something
called climate change or global warming. Apparently, that was something
humans have created by our way of living. I was told to turn off
the lights to save energy and to recycle paper to save resources. I remember thinking
that it was very strange that humans, who are
an animal species among others, could be capable of changing
the Earth’s climate. Because if we were,
and if it was really happening, we wouldn’t be talking
about anything else. As soon as you’d turn on the TV,
everything would be about that. Headlines, radio, newspapers, you would never read or hear
about anything else, as if there was a world war going on. But no one ever talked about it. If burning fossil fuels was so bad
that it threatened our very existence, how could we just continue like before? Why were there no restrictions? Why wasn’t it made illegal? To me, that did not add up. It was too unreal. So when I was 11, I became ill. I fell into depression, I stopped talking, and I stopped eating. In two months, I lost
about 10 kilos of weight. Later on, I was diagnosed
with Asperger syndrome, OCD and selective mutism. That basically means I only speak
when I think it’s necessary – now is one of those moments. (Applause) For those of us who are on the spectrum, almost everything is black or white. We aren’t very good at lying, and we usually don’t enjoy
participating in this social game that the rest of you seem so fond of. (Laughter) I think in many ways
that we autistic are the normal ones, and the rest of the people
are pretty strange, (Laughter) especially when it comes to
the sustainability crisis, where everyone keeps saying
climate change is an existential threat and the most important issue of all, and yet they just carry on like before. I don’t understand that, because if the emissions have to stop, then we must stop the emissions. To me that is black or white. There are no gray areas
when it comes to survival. Either we go on
as a civilization or we don’t. We have to change. Rich countries like Sweden
need to start reducing emissions by at least 15 percent every year. And that is so that we can stay
below a two-degree warming target. Yet, as the IPCC
have recently demonstrated, aiming instead for 1.5 degrees Celsius would significantly
reduce the climate impacts. But we can only imagine
what that means for reducing emissions. You would think the media
and every one of our leaders would be talking about nothing else, but they never even mention it. Nor does anyone ever mention the greenhouse gases
already locked in the system. Nor that air pollution is hiding a warming so that when we stop burning fossil fuels, we already have an extra level of warming perhaps as high as
0.5 to 1.1 degrees Celsius. Furthermore does hardly
anyone speak about the fact that we are in the midst
of the sixth mass extinction, with up to 200 species
going extinct every single day, that the extinction rate today is between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than what is seen as normal. Nor does hardly anyone ever speak about
the aspect of equity or climate justice, clearly stated everywhere
in the Paris Agreement, which is absolutely necessary
to make it work on a global scale. That means that rich countries need to get down to zero emissions
within 6 to 12 years, with today’s emission speed. And that is so that people
in poorer countries can have a chance to heighten
their standard of living by building some of the infrastructure
that we have already built, such as roads, schools, hospitals, clean drinking water,
electricity, and so on. Because how can we expect
countries like India or Nigeria to care about the climate crisis if we who already have everything
don’t care even a second about it or our actual commitments
to the Paris Agreement? So, why are we not reducing our emissions? Why are they in fact still increasing? Are we knowingly causing
a mass extinction? Are we evil? No, of course not. People keep doing what they do because the vast majority
doesn’t have a clue about the actual consequences
of our everyday life, and they don’t know
that rapid change is required. We all think we know,
and we all think everybody knows, but we don’t. Because how could we? If there really was a crisis, and if this crisis was caused
by our emissions, you would at least see some signs. Not just flooded cities,
tens of thousands of dead people, and whole nations leveled
to piles of torn down buildings. You would see some restrictions. But no. And no one talks about it. There are no emergency meetings,
no headlines, no breaking news. No one is acting
as if we were in a crisis. Even most climate scientists
or green politicians keep on flying around the world,
eating meat and dairy. If I live to be 100,
I will be alive in the year 2103. When you think about the future today,
you don’t think beyond the year 2050. By then, I will, in the best case,
not even have lived half of my life. What happens next? The year 2078, I will celebrate
my 75th birthday. If I have children or grandchildren,
maybe they will spend that day with me. Maybe they will ask me about you, the people who were around, back in 2018. Maybe they will ask
why you didn’t do anything while there still was time to act. What we do or don’t do right now
will affect my entire life and the lives of my children
and grandchildren. What we do or don’t do right now, me and my generation
can’t undo in the future. So when school
started in August of this year, I decided that this was enough. I set myself down on the ground
outside the Swedish parliament. I school striked for the climate. Some people say that I
should be in school instead. Some people say that I should study
to become a climate scientist so that I can “solve the climate crisis.” But the climate crisis
has already been solved. We already have
all the facts and solutions. All we have to do is
to wake up and change. And why should I be studying for a future
that soon will be no more when no one is doing anything
whatsoever to save that future? And what is the point of learning facts
in the school system when the most important facts given by the finest science
of that same school system clearly means nothing
to our politicians and our society. Some people say that Sweden
is just a small country, and that it doesn’t matter what we do, but I think that if a few children
can get headlines all over the world just by not coming to school
for a few weeks, imagine what we could all do
together if you wanted to. (Applause) Now we’re almost at the end of my talk, and this is where people
usually start talking about hope, solar panels, wind power,
circular economy, and so on, but I’m not going to do that. We’ve had 30 years of pep-talking
and selling positive ideas. And I’m sorry,
but it doesn’t work. Because if it would have, the emissions would have gone down by now. They haven’t. And yes, we do need hope, of course we do. But the one thing we need
more than hope is action. Once we start to act,
hope is everywhere. So instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then, and only then, hope will come. Today, we use 100 million
barrels of oil every single day. There are no politics to change that. There are no rules
to keep that oil in the ground. So we can’t save the world
by playing by the rules, because the rules have to be changed. Everything needs to change, and it has to start today. Thank you. (Applause)

  1. Hillarious. Taking advantage of children for spreading progressive ideas. The real definition of "left". Aren't there any progressive institutions to raise their voice up, against exploiting of children?

  2. Dear Greta, If this is something to be in an absolute panic about: why aren't all Presidential candidates, and concerned world leaders, only campaigning by teleconference? Why are those who are the nation's "moral compass," Hollywood and Congressional Left, still globetrotting? Why haven't Al Gore, Obama, Clinton, Michael Moore, Don Lemon, Joy Behar, Cher, Barbra … all concerned world leaders and all scientists, cancelled all air travel and downsized their homes? Why haven't they all become vegans, using their moral authority and pristine ethics, as inspiration to the "unwashed masses"? We should be PANICKING? It's all "do as I say, not as I do." Or, as so called virtuous Christians/Jews/Muslims/Hindus etc., who sanctimoniously declare their belief in God's miracles, until it's inconvenient to practice their beliefs. I see FAR more than most people would like me to see.

  3. Sie hat nur das Problem das sie noch nicht in die Pupertät gekommen ist… Wen der Tag mal kommt wird sie sich auch nichtmehr für sowas interessieren :p

  4. My six year old spoke about weather modification at speakers corner and he also speaks two languages.
Back the in the 80’s a spoke at a school assembly about climate change and got quite a few teachers to join greenpeace but what I said now leads to the agenda of solar radiation management and all you are hearing is information that is 30 years out of date.
That 12 year estimate was about the point of no return which past in 1997.
If you can’t repair the rainforests you have zero chance

  5. Instead of being so focused on cutting everything out of our lives, why cant we take a balancing approach? Replant all the trees, plant your own fruit, still eat meat if you want but maybe buy local, use renewable energy instead. Not everything has to be you cant do this or you must stop that, just use alternatives and get into new habits

  6. I suppose she lives in a cave with no gas or electric, wears grass clothes and lives on nuts and berries. NO? Oh well then, she is part of "climate change".

  7. all the people says:"we need to stop with emissions." but we cannot, thats the problem. we cannot stop China,USA and India or we stop the mudial economy. Thats the problem.

  8. She said we should give up meat and dairy, which are very nourishing foods, yet we consume a huge amount of non-nourishing, harmful foods or substances that require agricultural practices that are causing global warming, as well as many nourishing foods that are shipped or flown thousands of miles. These include chocolate, coffee, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, refined wheat, soybeans, modern oils made from seeds, indigestible and bee-killing almonds, tobacco, marijuana, wine, beer, coconut oil, and olive oil, all packaged up in plastic. And fruit, that is supposed to be some kind of answer to our environmental problems, requires a huge amount of pesticides. If we want to eat ecologically, we need to stop eating so much fruit, cook our own food to avoid packaging and waste, and shop locally, using the whole animal or fish in soups and stews. You can't compare meat and dairy, especially when they're pastured and locally-sourced, to non-nourishing and harmful foods and substances-these are what we need to eliminate, so we can save our soils, our planet, and our health. I get rye grain for my sourdough rye bread from a local farmer, who told me that rye grows better without fertilizer or pesticides, in contrast to wheat, which requires both in large amounts. Eat like your ancestors, and both you, and the planet, will be healthy.

  9. Predicting a long-term future climate state is impossible. The climate is a coupled non-linear chaotic system, this makes research and modelling impossible.
Panic, anxiety and fear are all emotions, it's ill-advised to solve any problem when in an emotional state. Keep calm, turn to independent scientific data and think things through before acting!

  10. Climate is changing by it s does this for s not caused by humans this is propaganda and massive psy ops to pass anti-human agenda

  11. ‘This girl has a cyborg face that ignores emotion – no smile, no laugh, no astonishment, no amazement, no pain, no joy. She is a silly child seeking approval. She is a one a flock of sheep 🐑 who believes himself free by bleating the catechism that adults teach them’
Michel Onfray ~ French philosopher and writer

  12. I thought this would be the next big movement for humankind. But this video barely got a tenth of the views of a piewdiepie meme review

  13. Wie könnt ihr ein autistisches Kind instrumentalisieren ihr kranken Freaks? Sie ist nicht der Messias sondern euer Opfer!

  14. Well white peoples birth rates are at an all time low. This talking potato should really be telling brown people to stop breeding so damn much. Btw she looks like shes taking a dump several times throughout her speech. Sad her parents and politicians are using her.

  15. The problem is even if a good part of the world acts, countries like China and Russia and others might not be apart of acting which makes it almost pointless to even bother.

  16. Climate experts that can't get my weather 100% accurate or detect and earthquake more the 10 seconds in advance. Sounds more like the experts don't know their hand from their foot. Saving the climate doesn't exist. Sorry to break it to ya. Read the book of Revelation and do us all a favor. Learn the truth. Stopping climate change, lol. Might as well say, lets stop the volcano from erupting. Stop getting duped. Hey everybody. Lets stop catastrophic climate change.

  17. Important and vital message. One of the best and most authentic talks on this issue that I have seen. I am thankful Greta is truly acting on her convictions.

  18. Sweetheart when I was about your age there was this gulf war…the videos of war touched me like you…..but almost after 30 years we still have war in Syria and mass immigration …gun massacre…..nothing will change…..we are all average people who have to get up in the morning and work to pay bills …..don't look back and regret years later that you didn't enjoy life like a normal youth…..go to school learn …learn skills to help you survive…go crazy have fun… are from a tiny Scandinavian country…..the people who are really polluting are from other populated countries. You will be surprised the amount of waste Mumbai ( india )produces in one day……everything has to end….the earth will end too….maybe in distant future another planet will be like earth……remember Billy Joel song we didn't start the fire

  19. So now teenagers with Asperger syndrome and messianic complex lecture adults on subjects such as this? Well, actors with IQ in low double digits but serious private jet obsession, do it all the time, and the public refuses to just throw rotten eggs into their faces. This super-annoying and pretty vicious child deserves nothing less. Even before she starts speaking.

  20. She is like a game of thrones character just imagine her giving you hope on the radio during wartime with the nazis lets hope she can make the politicians take action.

  21. The Satanic New World Order are not satisfied with transgenderism. Now they want to turn children into adults and adults into children.

  22. The Illuminati control Sweden more than any other country in the world. Has anyone investigated who this girl is and who is promoting her?

  23. My action started two months ago. No more milk, no more cheese, no more eggs, no more red meat, no more chicken. Thank you for your words! Very wise and honest.

  24. The global industry is not ready yet to lower all their emissions, it simply can't be stopped as quickly as we would want to, simply because the moment a company drastically spends money on r&d on how to improve their co2 footprint, reduces their efficiency, in this global competitive market a company from overseas will be in the advantage.

The whole nature, the mindset, of humans would need to change and I personally do not see this happening, atleast not quickly enough.

  26. I was saying all this back in the early 80s all over my community, the people I addressed looked at me as if I was talking double Dutch…now people are taking it seriously. Point been don’t blame older people of today, because we tried it and got shut down…concentrate on the big cooperations, starting with the big cruise liner company’s.

  27. It scares me how grown ups takes the word so seriously of a child who knows nothing about the world neither from experience or knowledge . Indeed, the mayhem or apocalypse is coming, but from another problem…

  28. Weaponizing of children is a new low for the progressive movement… This useful Greta reminds me of one of those girls that were used to encourage the workers to hand over every grain of their harvest for the better of the ussr in the earl 1930's; fascinating times we live in.

  29. How embarrassing for all the politicians sitting in power who rest on their hands taking bribes from coal companies that a young girl makes you all look impotent.

  30. Its too bad these kids believe the lies of the left. There is not such thing as climate change it was invented for you to give up your rights to make decisions. They want you to believe that you can't be trusted to take care of the Earth so they can take control of the population. This little girl is just a naive kid, and the media is eating it up.

  31. this just shows how the religion of science exists. "we already have all the facts and solutions" describing science as if it omniscient and omnipotent.

the arrogance and irresponsibility of her position, that armed with the religion of science she already knows everything. at 15 years old she already has everything figured out, including all the social, economic and political implications of what she is saying. socrates said that he knows that he knows nothing, and yet this girl claims she has all the facts

wise people understand that the reason why life is interesting is because its an unfolding mystery, that each answer creates further questions. being a good human being is about constant recapitulation and revaluation when presented with new information. that a responsible person understands that standing on the shoulders of giants isnt simply enough, that each generation has an obiligation to elevate human understanding, but no this girl at the beginning of her life already has everything figured out, and whats worse people take her seriously and encourage her arrogance and irresponsibility

  32. Dont ever never get your knichers in a twist. Stop Reading your manus, go back to school, and do do somthing productive. The only thing you are doing now is going the globalist earend.

  33. My husband and I have been vegan since 1996, we ride our bikes to work most days, have been recycling for many years, live a very anti-consumerist lifestyle. So as far as we are concerned Greta's preaching to the choir.

  34. "If we can't save the world by playing by the rules, then the rules have to be changed" Wise talk that she has! I'm impressed.

  35. Ok just a quick thing I love when I see metal and paper straws but plastic still need to be used because disabled people with chronic illnesses like POTTS can only use plastic straws watch Jessica Kelgren-Fozard for more on this subject.

  36. si seulement cette fille réalisé les pays responsables pour cela sont india et chine pas le états-unis et europe. Parle avec ils jeune fille

  37. If we forget what to do to better the planet, so why can't the government take action and dictate rules for people to fallow.
We need reforestation on certain parts of this planet, we need to reduce our reproduction status all over the world.( In China is one child per family, in my country is three per family, but in the US there is no limy. One of my co-workers was on her 8th child at the age of 35).
Instead of new housing construction, lets remodel. Schools need to teach children the benefits of veganism and reforestation. We as parents need to be educated as well with governmental group impositions. There are so many scientists that are able to develop Tesla's energy project, but the government wants us to keep paying for gas and expensive electrical bills. We don't need cars that run on gas, we need solar transportation.
We all need to stand up and fight for a better future of our generations to come.

Boy I got excited! Next time I'll probably be right next to her. Lol

  38. Yeah….key word here is IF.

Why doesn't this little girls parents teach her how to handle the pressures of the world and not encourage her dangerous, obviously media created and directed, delusions. Everything she says is the most extreme alarmist rhetoric used to scare the public and shame us into using unsustainable, expensive, not actually "clean" or carbon free energy. Why does anyone believe or expect someone so young to understand the complicated, nuanced, science of climate change? Especially since she has obviously been inundated by the hysterical claims made by only one side of the debate.
